The Trickster is an active archetype in the collective consciousness right now. We all have an inner Trickster, and the collective Trickster is always afoot. Trickster is when we talk ourselves out of intuition, or when we are led astray for things that, in hindsight, are clearly too good to be true.
Trickster is thinking the stripper is in love with us, and then being surprised when she’s actually just a dancer with bills to pay. Trickster is when every bathroom on the plane is out of order the day you come down with food poisoning. You knew better than to eat gas station sushi on the way to the airport!
Which part of us tricked the other parts into believing we’re invincible, immune to outcomes? The parts of ourselves that long to be special, perhaps?
The thing about Trickster is, sometimes he tricks so well that he falls for his own traps; he is the catalyst for his own downfall. It would be tragic if it also wasn’t kind of funny (which is exactly how you can spot a trickster in the first place).
Tragic, but laughable; shocking, yet obvious — do you know the type? Read into this what you will in terms of current events. If there’s one thing Trickster shows us, it’s that laughter can help us course-correct anytime we’re led astray by ourselves or others. That gas station sushi turned Captain Underpants debacle — horrendous. But laughable, eventually.
To reach that point, though, we must be humble enough to admit our foolishness. Of course, this is no easy task for the prideful, whose sense of importance clouds judgement.
Oh look, another trick. Typical.
